Lots and lots of time, on this planet called Earth, we hear the human species say this a lot : “Childhood was awesome, I want to be a kid again.” And also the spectrum in which this has been talked about is so wide that:

we have had songs on it:

..give me some sunshine,

   give me some rain.

   Give me another chance,

I wanna grow up once again.

and whatever this is:

We don’t grow into creativity, we grow out of it. Or rather we get educated out of it. (Ken Robinson)

Since these two examples and clearly many others show that there are so many people who agree to this and with their approval behind my back, I can a little more confidently say that I am right when I say that, ‘If we have a choice, we’d rather be kids and be a pain in the ass than whatever we are right now and just avoid pains in our asses.’

But that feels like an over-simplification. Lets dig just a little bit deeper. Is it really true that:

  1. If we have a chance, we will unanimously choose to step in a Time Machine which can take us back to our childhood times, but that would mean living in a world with two versions of me, making things much more complex and maybe even worse. No this is not what I mean when I say I want to be a kid again.

  2. Or is it that, if we have a chance, we will unanimously choose to step in a Time Machine which can transform us to that kid version, but that would mean I will make same choices and after a few years I will again be standing at the same place with same time machine in a Time loop. No this is also not what I mean when I say I want to be a kid again.

  3. Or is it that, if we have a chance, we will unanimously choose to step in a Time Machine which can just transform us to a kid version at this very present moment, but that would mean I will be even a bigger fuck-up when I am at this same age after a few years and would probably want to do this again. No this is also not what I mean when I say I want to be a kid again.

  4. Or is it that, if we have a chance, we will unanimously choose to step in a Time Machine that can transform us into our kid version without losing all our memories, but then again, you will always be feeling like you are this very young person, who has these experiences of an old man in mind and again wouldn’t fit in anywhere but will keep doing these things which you think are right and will again eventually end up not knowing what to do. It’d be better than the present present, but no this is also not what I mean when I say I want to be a kid again.

  5. Or is it that, if we have a chance, we will unanimously choose to step in a Time Machine that does both 3 and 4. To be a kid version of ourselves without losing all our memories and that too in the present day It’d also be better than the present present, but no this is also not what I mean when I say I want to be a kid again.
  6. Or is it if we have a chance, we will unanimously choose to grow up only once, but the right way, because this is the ingredient that has actually missed out. And that is what we are trying to escape from by metaphorically saying, “I miss my childhood. I want to be kid again.”

When actually what we mean is that:

  • Everything in this evolved post-civilisation and pre-developed era is commercialised. Hence, everything is judged & valued accordingly. But our minds are still evolving from the hunter-gatherer-survival stage, slowly and slowly. So, either  we end up changing a lot of what our core personality is, or we miss fitting in with everything else. So, Yeah! It’s no surpsirse, I’d choose to be  a kid again rather than trying to fit in all this myself.
  • I don’t having any freaking idea what the hell is going on with the people in all these moments, after they take birth and before they die. Secondly, it makes us have to relate ourselves to everything else. And it’s not rocket science to put both these facts together and coming to the conclusion that we are also kind of lost ourselves. So, Yeah! It’s no surpsirse, I’d choose to be  a kid again rather than trying to find my way back home from here.

  • And in those very few moments between the Birth and Death, I don’t understand why people, why every fucking person is so bad to each other so fucking often. It just doesn’t make sense to me. Judgement. Control. Power. All that, the whole spectrum. So, Yeah! It’s no surpsirse, I’d choose to be  a kid again rather than fit in all this myself.

  • Sometimes I can’t explain, when things don’t go as I assume? Or better, how do you explain when some things happen around you that seem to defy all of your assumptions? So, Yeah! It’s no surpsirse, I’d choose to be  a kid again rather than trying to figure out what is the right  thing to do.

  • We are raised not to lie, to be a good human being, to act normal, whatever that is. But then capitalism at its most ruthless, not only wants but even rewards psychopathic behavior – the lack of empathy, the glibness, the cunning and manipulative. Again, both these things, which were supposed to make sense together, just doesn’t add up. So, Yeah! I’d choose to be a kid again rather than trying to figure out what do I want to be Batman or Bruce Wayne.

I know what we do, same something that we some how know, is the right thing to do at this place. And if we don’t know, we ask someone, and the same recursive cycle goes on. We try to become that best kid version of ourselves, who kind of have an idea about ‘how to act like a good adult’.

But that raises a question, Why would anyone in their right mind do that? Just act all their life; becoming this one character after another, that they may or may not even like. Is it because the only other choice left behind is ‘be yourself and be weird, be a misfit’? And because that is far-far easier said than done, we shouldn’t be surprised that most teenagers think that there’s something wrong with them, that no one will be able to truly understand them, and hence no one will ever love them and that they are gonna die alone, and that is if they don’t somehow die beforehand. Why do we think that the greatest crime we can do is to be different? Weren’t we evolved to be that way? Or is it the opposite, that it’s all  Evolution’s fault?

I am assuming that you believe Evolution is true and what is also true about that is that it’s slow. For instance, just 50-60 thousand years ago, one of our great grandparent was also facing some problems, not the above crap, some real ones like: Where to get food? How to protect myself and my family from wild? So, being part of a tribe was no choice back then, it was crucial for survival. And because of that:

  • our present day mind is almost the same mind for which the only source of knowledge was what he heard from other tribe members or the travelers.
  • our present day mind is almost the same mind for which nothing in the world was more important than being accepted by his fellow tribe members, especially those in positions of authority.
  • our present day mind is almost the same mind for which the worst thing to happen would be any kind of his disapproval by the tribe.
  • our present day mind is almost the same mind for which being socially accepted was everything.

Because of all this shit our ancestors did, we evolved  with an over-the-top obsession of what others thought of us—a craving for social approval and admiration, and a paralyzing fear of being disliked. But even with a little peek in our surroundings it can be said that times they are a-changin’. But it’s good to know that that kind of ‘mind-set’ is just a mind-set, which gives a litte bit of hope for something.

Latest Literature Nobel prize winner Bob Dylan puts all of this beautifully in this just one stanza:

Come gather ’round people
Wherever you roam
And admit that the waters
Around you have grown
And accept it that soon
You’ll be drenched to the bone
If your time to you
Is worth savin’
Then you better start swimmin’
Or you’ll sink like a stone
For the times they are a-changin’.

MORAL of the story: What ever you say this place is, wouldn’t it be so much better if it had a living system, who’s core function would be to teach us or at least prepare for what may come ahead. Oh wait! we already have something like that, which is supposed to do something like that: Our Education System. But its present version sucks because first it is outdated and second it needs another few thousand word posts specifically about it. As I am pretty sure we’re gonna keep living this same way, in which we feel we are a lot more better and intelligent in a lot of ways than all other species on Earth, then we don’t just need some tweaks in our present learning system, but find a good replacement soon. e.g.: Finland.

P.S.: I think I missed something, something that comes between these two things: Childhood and Grownups – “Teenage a.k.a the growing up period”. But this is not completely my fault, it’s exactly like the way it’s being over-looked in some of our real lives too? Solution: go to Finland during those years.

more on Finland soon…
